In early 1865, following the capture of Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina, by Union forces, Jefferson Davis belatedly granted General Lee supreme command of Confederate troops. Even so, Northern regiments maintained their relentless march across North Carolina, securing control of Fayetteville, Bentonville, Goldsboro, and Raleigh by the middle of April.

Drained by the prolonged federal siege of Petersburg and Richmond, General Lee's men staged a desperate final offensive by seizing Fort Stedman on March 25. A swift enemy counterstrike soon erased that advantage, compelling Confederate forces to abandon Richmond overnight on April 2. Over the following week, relentless federal pursuit along the Appomattox River severed every path of retreat. Grant officially accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, and Johnston capitulated to Sherman at Durham Station, North Carolina, on April 26—drawing the American Civil War to a definitive close and abolishing slavery across the United States.
