Description
ZAO (deepfake) — Thanks to neural networks, which can automate the tedious work of video editing, a computer algorithm now handles the heavy lifting. Once again, this proves the point: the Zao deepfake app lets you place your own face into any scene from a Hollywood movie, without you needing to understand the technical details of video processing. Not everyone, however, was a fan of this app.
In just two days, Zao climbed to the top of the charts in China's App Store and on Android markets. The app was developed by Momo, the company behind one of the country's largest dating streaming platforms. Zao uses built-in deepfake technology to swap the face of the original character with any other face, and the whole process takes only a few seconds. Behind the scenes, though, the underlying algorithm took several hours to train.
According to Bloomberg, however, the app may not be as secure as users would hope, since its privacy policy states that Momo may use the generated videos for its own purposes. The developers insist this clause is fairly predictable, explaining that the data is needed to keep training their neural network.
