World Conqueror 2 is exactly what its name suggests. Rather than covering the whole globe at once, the campaign breaks down into a large number of smaller battles. As the Allies, players first have to hold back the Nazi invasion of Russia through a series of increasingly brutal scenarios.

The gameplay is demanding. Each skirmish starts with a set number of troops already on the map, but you can buy and deploy additional units depending on the funds you have. Once per round, you can take out a bank loan to help pay for your own little war. Many of the units you purchase can join the fight right away, which keeps the pace moving quickly.

The built-in tutorial falls short and could use better translation. It gives only a quick overview of the game, such as what the on-screen buttons do, and it isn't very hands-on or thorough given how intricate the gameplay is. Be ready for a steep learning curve and to lose more than a few battles along the way, as every good general must. The English translation isn't the worst I've seen, but it feels clumsy, and key information is often hard to follow because of awkward syntax and confusing phrasing.

The visuals use a muted color palette that keeps units easy to tell apart. The battle animations are a solid, grittier and more realistic tribute to Advance Wars. Once you grasp the game's finer points, the controls are simple to learn and use, which makes it enjoyable to play.
