Amid a crowd of sword-and-spear hack and slash games, FALLENMAGE stands out as a ghostly, eerie adventure for players who want to step into the shoes of a fallen mage. Here, you are thrown into gloomy dungeons where strength doesn't come from brute muscle but from ancient runes. The storytelling really impressed me: controlling a mage burning with hatred, fighting alone against a horde of monsters, is genuinely thrilling.
The biggest draw is the magic-only combat system, governed by a strict mana management mechanic. Mindlessly mashing buttons won't get you far. You have to think ahead: when to unleash area-of-effect spells to clear swarms, and when to hold back and conserve your "energy" for the final boss. The skill system and attribute tree let you shape your character as a "mobile fortress" or a long-range assassin, whichever you prefer. Pick the wrong upgrade, though, and you'll feel the consequences right away. It's demanding, but extremely addictive.
